Belgium Avenue Neighbourhood House (BANH Inc.) operates neighbourhood houses on the Collingwood and North Richmond public housing estates. The houses are a friendly meeting place for the local community and are open daily for drop-ins during school term dates. The houses offer programs and activities including sewing, Tai Chi, painting class, Yarra Men’s Shed, computer classes, ACFE and choirs. They also offer a range of cooking and food programs including the vibrant monthly Twilight Markets on both estates.
BANH uses a community development framework, and has a particular focus on using arts and culture as a tool for community development. Highlights of BANH’s annual calendar include its much anticipated Harvest Festival on the Collingwood housing estate, and annual Gala Ball at the Collingwood Town Hall. Like most neighbourhood houses, BANH Inc. uses a community membership model of governance which ensures that its work genuinely meets the needs of local people. BANH is part of the North East Neighbourhood House Network.
